Chiropractic is founded on the premise that the body is self healing and self regulating.
The Central Neural System
(Your own “Mission Control” Center)
Your body is controlled and coordinated by the central neural system. The central neural system is comprised of the brain, the spinal cord, the spinal nerves and the vertebra. There are 24 freely movable vertebrae that make up the spinal column or back bone. These vertebrae or spinal bones support and protect the spinal cord and spinal nerves. The vertebrae are held in place by the muscles, tendons, ligaments and discs that make up the spinal column. The purpose of the brain, spinal cord and nerves are to allow the body to communicate or carry messages, both from the brain to the body and from the body back to the brain.
Vertebral Subluxations
The need for Chiropractic arises when a vertebra moves out of its proper position and exerts pressure on the delicate spinal nerve or the spinal cord itself. This is called a Vertebral Subluxation. This pressure is very rarely direct bone on a nerve or cord. It is actually a closing of an opening that the nerve or cord goes through (like stepping on a garden hose, the water still comes out but at a greatly reduced rate). The pressure on the nerve or cord can cause interference within the nerve or cord and that reduces its ability to carry the message or information to its destination.
The effects of Vertebral Subluxations on the body could literally be anything. A Subluxation in the upper neck area could cause headaches, blurred vision, neck pain or ringing in the ears. A mid back Subluxation could be the source of an upset stomach. A low back Subluxation could result in low back pain, irritable bowels or even reproductive problems. Vertebral Subluxations are rarely the only factor in causing whatever issue someone might be experiencing, yet if you could remove the Vertebral Subluxation and decrease the pressure on the nerves the body would be more likely to work more efficiently and more effectively.
Stress; Physical, Chemical and/or Emotional stresses causes Vertebral Subluxations.
Physical stress – Some physical stresses are obvious such as a sports injury, car accident or a slip and fall, yet others are not as obvious such as sitting for long periods of time, poor posture, carrying heavy objects (including backpacks and pocket books, repetitive motions or improper exercise.
Chemical stress – Chemical stresses can be allergies to things like pollen, mold, insect bites and penicillin, but also can be to foods like milk or wheat. Chemical stresses can also be found on the job like exposure to cleaning supplies or inks, fertilizers or insecticides. Recreationally chemical stresses can be alcohol consumption, smoking or being in a room with smokers. Chemical stresses can also be in the air we breathe, the medicines we take and the water we drink.
Emotional stress – Emotional stresses are usually the most damaging because they are not so obvious and we usually just disregard them as trivial. Emotional stress can include anything including things work related issues, personal relationships, road rage, time management issues, loss of someone you know, war, or anything that occupies your mind.
Specific Adjustments are how Chiropractors correct Vertebral Subluxations.
Detecting and correcting Vertebral Subluxations is what Chiropractors are trained to do. The method of correcting a Vertebral Subluxation is called an Adjustment. Adjustments are safe, gentle forces put into the regions of the spine where subluxations are found. Many different techniques are used here at Matzner Family Chiropractic, each dependent on the individual and their condition. Studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments are effective at relieving pain and structural disorders in the joints and muscles. Like an iceberg, the results that you see are only the tip of the benefits you receive.
Who can benefit from Chiropractic care?
veryone who has endured stress can benefit from Chiropractic care. The oldest person that Dr. Matzner has cared for was 98 years old. She stated "I am better able to care for myself today then a decade ago." The youngest
was his daughter at 5 minutes old (The birth process is very physically,
chemically and emotionally stressful to both mother and child). Dr.
Matzner's patient profile consists of people of all backgrounds and
occupations. He has provided care for athletes of all levels, people with
AIDS, Cancer, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis and polio survivors to
name a few. All those patients came in for different reasons and received
very different care, yet all benefited from what they received.
How will you feel following an Adjustment?
The Chiropractic spinal adjustment is a very powerful procedure. At the moment that an adjustment is made, literally hundreds of bodily functions and activities are affected. As the flow of nerve impulses over the spinal cord and spinal nerves are normalized, the body begins to renew and rebuild itself. Because "subluxations" may impinge different nerves in different individuals, people often experience different feelings after an adjustment. For example, some people experience a feeling of peace and relaxation after an adjustment. This relaxed feeling may last for the rest of the day or the week and may lead to deep refreshing sleep. Others have felt a warm feeling flowing to various parts of their bodies that is very soothing. Some feel very energetic and do all their chores or business that day with a light happy feeling. Sometimes people that have been adjusted for the first time may feel some discomfort or even soreness. Fortunately, even those experiencing such a first time reaction to the adjustment later enjoy the feeling of well being that usually accompanies adjustment after a short period of time. Others may find their symptoms have begun to disappear, and that the problem they came to the chiropractor for has begun to lessen after the first visit. There are some people who feel no different after an adjustment. That does not mean that they are not benefitting from their adjustment, it just means that they're not feeling an external reaction.
Here are quotes from some of modern man’s greatest minds that best define the philosophy and approach that we take here at Matzner Family Chiropractic.
“The doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.”
Thomas Edison
"Each patient carries his own doctor inside him. They come to us not knowing that truth. We are at our best when we give the doctor who resides in each patient a chance to work."
Albert Schweitzer, M.D.
"While other professions are concerned with changing the environment to suit the weakened body, chiropractic is concerned with strengthening the body to suit the environment."
B.J. Palmer, D.C.
"Intelligence is present everywhere in our bodies... Our own inner intelligence is far superior to any we can try to substitute from the outside."
Deepak Chopra, M.D.
